Youth Minister Training – Be Creative

When the drive in your heart is to get your teenage friends in front of Jesus, you will naturally get creative. Remember the story in Mark 2:2-5. A paralyzed guy’s friends were trying to get him to Jesus because they were convinced that Jesus could do something for their friend. When they got to the house where Jesus was speaking it was too crowded to get in. So they climbed up on the roof, tore a hole in the roof, and lowered their friend’s bed down on ropes right in front of Jesus.

Do you know why? Not because it was their job to do so or because it was important to their organization. It was actually way out of their way and probably very unpopular with the owner of the house. We can only guess that it was that important to the paralyzed guy’s friends.

One of the benefits to really getting to know your kids is you will find a desire to do the extraordinary to get your teenage friends in front of Jesus. You may find a very rebellious 16 year old boy that doesn’t fit the youth group mold, but he plays guitar. You might seek out a hard rock Christian group in concert somewhere and invite him to go with you. You may not even really like that kind of music but you know he does.

I knew a very studious and kind of unpopular girl who was always reading dark horror type books. I gave her the series titled “This present darkness” which was a battle between angles and demons. She enjoyed reading the books and it got her thinking about spiritual things and gave us something to talk about.

The examples are endless. Create your own examples by thinking about how to reach people who are a little out of the box. Once you let these kids get to you, you will find a way to get them to Jesus. This is when youth ministry gets fun. Do you have this desire?
